A lot of American's, similar to myself, have looked back on the (albeit tragic) events of World War One as a patriotic landmark in our countries history. I always was of the opinion that it was a time that had citizens banding together and gaining a sense of civic duty. Men of all ages and backgrounds were sent either through the draft or volunteering. Women at home took over the jobs the men left behind. It was a garnered sense of community amongst millions of people with one thing in common: a love for the country and to protect those back home. However, after watching those videos and doing other research, I realize that I was greatly mistaken. In order to complete this assignment and properly answer the questions for this post, I really had to take a moment to mentally categorize what my relationship with technology truly is. It's not something that I often think about. Modern advancements in technology, specifically iPhones, have led to such a convenient form of constant communication. Everett Rogers' Diffusion Theory (1962) provides a thorough framework for comprehending how concepts, inventions, and technological advancements gradually permeate societal systems and lead to long term effects, positive and negative. After reading the article, the first example of a technology that has completely infiltrated the world is iPhones. Today, almost everyone has some form of iPhone, with some people even owning multiple for various reasons!  Several important aspects have contributed to the success of iPhones .  In class today, we watched several Ted Talk videos over the extent that our privacy is currently being violated in this day and age, often in ways we do not realize. For the most part, most of our entire lives are able to be found online: with a simple google search of a name, you can easily find out someone's address, where they've attended school, and even social security in some occasions. Fundamentally, privacy is the ability of individuals to manage their personal data and choose how it is gathered, utilized, and shared. However, this concept of privacy has been severely tested and, in many cases, undermined in today's technologically evolved world.  There's essentially a power struggle between the desire for  reasonable expectation of privacy and the desire to keep our modern pleasures of technology.      This first round of EOTO presentations has provided me with the opportunity to learn about several different forms of communication I otherwise wouldn't have been as knowledgable about. While I felt everyone did an excellent job, I actually happened to find one of my group mates presentation to be one of the most interesting. I was actually previously aware of the usage of carrier pigeons in historical contexts due to a high school AP World History Course! It's crazy how the most niche information sticks with you, because trust me, 14 year old Isabel found absolutely no interest nor thought I would ever utilize the information again. However- I knew that carrier pigeons were heavily utilized in Ancient Mesopotamia , which historians consider to be the first civilization.
